| | | | | | | | | Sports / Fixtures + Results | | | | Sports Report - April 2011 | | | BOYS HOCKEY Under 13 In the Quarter finals of the cup the Under 13’s beat High School. After a poor first half, where they went into half time 2-1 down, they found their way in the second, and played some of the best hockey of the year, finally coming away as 7-2 winners. The semi-final tied them against Wesley College. This would be a good indicator of where the team had come, as at the start of the year Wesley had won 5-0 easily in the league fixture between the teams.
Sutton met St. Andrews in the semi final of the league, and were more than a match for their south Dublin counter parts. With Andrew’s having already won the cup, they went into this match as favourites, but early on Sutton caused them a few problems, and had them on the back foot for large part of the game. However two well worked shorts corners by the Booterstown school, left Sutton 2-0 down, and chasing the game from then on. With a late goal killing the game, the score finished 3-0 to St Andrews.
Even though the Under 13’s finished the season with no silverware, they can take a lot from this season.
Minors The Minors finished the season in great style. In the cup they reached the final, after comfortably beating Wesley College 4-2 in the semi final, in a game were the Sutton dominated from the very start. In the final they faced St Andrews, who went into the game as massive favourites, with Sutton seemingly having no chance at all. This didn’t unsettle the Sutton Park team though, and they went into the game knowing they could cause a major upset. The game was all square after full time, with both teams having chances to win the game. The game then had to be decided during extra time. Again both teams could have won the game, but with minutes left on the clock, St Andrews won a short corner, and with a lucky deflection off a defender won the game 1-0. An awful way to lose a game, but the guys played fantastically, and well deserved the plaudits they received after.
In the semi final of the league, Sutton once again met St Andrews. After the final the guys knew they had what it took to win this game, and were no longer scared of their opposition. The game was fairly even and with 10 minutes left, St Andrews were awarded a short corner, and in a repeat to the final, scored a goal, which was deflected off the defender.
As a direct result of reaching the Leinster Cup Final, the Minors also qualified for the John Waring Trophy. This is an All-Ireland Tournament, comprising the two cup finalists in Ulster, Munster and Leinster, and thus the best 6 Under 14 teams in Ireland.
The results from the tournament were as follows: - vs Ashton (Munster) – 1-1 (Gav O’Brien) - vs Banbridge Academy (Ulster) – 2-1 (Gav O’Brien x 2) - vs St Andrew’s (Leinster) – 0-0 - vs Wallace High School (Ulster) – 1-0 (Aodan Fee) - vs Midleton College (Munster) – 1-0 (Aodan Fee)
Juniors The Juniors had an average sort of season, reaching the quarter finals of the cup, where they faced the some what unstoppable Wesley College, and reached the semi finals of the league, meeting St Andrews.
In both games the boys did well, but the two south side schools just had the edge on both occasions.
Although the team can take a lot of positives from the year, including the fact that they remain together for another year at this age group, with all the players in 3rd year or below.
Seniors Had a disappointing All-Irelands in regards to results, but slowly improved throughout the tournament, ending on a high against Methodist College, Belfast.
Seniors finished the season as the only team with some silverware.
This form then carried onto the domestic season after Christmas, a cup and league double header against King’s Hospital resulted in victory, with the end result meaning they had qualified for the semi finals of both the league and the Senior Trophy.
In the Trophy they were drawn against The High School, which turned out to be a hard fought game. The game was tight throughout, with both teams having chances to steal the glory. However Sutton came away as deserved winners 2-1.
This set up a final day appearance against St Columba’s at UCD. Sutton Park won by 3 goals to 2. This win is significant as it is the first Senior ‘A’ trophy that the school has won, and lets hope there are plenty more to come.
All in all, it has been a very successful year for Sutton Park Boys’ Hockey. Out of 9 competitions, we made it to 8 Semi Finals and 2 Finals. Out of those 2 Finals we won 1 of them, and were only beaten in extra time in the other. Along with this we also qualified for 2 All-Ireland competitions, the Senior tournament which is held next October and the Minor tournament, were the boys came so close to winning, but unfortunately were undone by goal difference.
| | | Girls Hockey Unfortunately no girls’ teams progressed to a final this year in their respective competitions. Without doubt the highlight of the year was the Senior Tour to Edinburgh, which turned out to be very successful indeed. Their first game was against Currie High School, which the team drew 2-2 and had chances throughout the game to come away with a victory. Their second game of the trip saw them face Linlithgow High School, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0.
In fact Linlithgow were so impressed with the girls, that they asked if they could have a re match when the school was touring Dublin later that month. The Sutton Park girls put on a great day for their guests, providing food for them all, and playing a very entertaining match, which resulted in Sutton coming away 3-0 winners, with Shannen Price scoring a hat trick.
To celebrate a successful season for the under 13’s, Mr Beattie and Miss O’Hare took the 1st Year Group on a trip to Northern Ireland to play against top hockey school, Banbridge Academy. This was a very successful trip for all concerned with both the girls and boys playing a match each, and then the whole year group enjoying some shopping time at The Outlet.
| Athletics Sarah Deneher finished 2nd at the Dublin Community Games in the Cross Country. She will now go on to represent the Dublin Area in the All-Ireland Community Games later in the year.
