SCI FEST IRELAND 2012 – SUTTON PARK STUDENT SUCCESSES
On Wednesday 9th May four teams of Sutton Park students packed together their projects – the products of many months of Scientific research and very hard work- and headed to the Institute of Technology Tallaght for the 2012 SciFest Ireland Finals. SciFest celebrated their 6th Year by inviting back their first ever overall winner of SciFest Ireland – Edain Quinn (past pupil of Sutton Park)- to open the ceremony and later present some of the awards. Edain is now a Physiotherapist working in a UK hospital.
Congratulations to all the students who made it through to these finals. All of the students were a credit to themselves and the school and put an enormous amount of work into their projects.
Luke Maguire, William Quinn & Jakob Ziewer (1st Year) did a fantastic project on the effect of listening to music on the ability to learn. They used their fellow students as test subjects playing classical or rock music or no music whilst the students did timed memory tests. Their results revealed that those who listened to classical music performed slightly better than the other two groups. They presented their project very well to the judges and had an impressive display. Well done!
Ashling Sugrue, Cherie O’Keeffe & Jonathon Andrews (1st Year) did a very interesting project on facial recognition capabilities of humans. They designed a rotating plate on which they attached an upside down photo of Barack Obama whose eyes and mouth had been rotated 180 degrees. The portrait seemed OK upside down but took on a weird appearance as they rotated their plate. They discovered females were slightly faster at detecting the weird appearance. They worked hard on their project and presented it extremely well to the judges. Well done!
Ellen McGrady Hogan & Carla Mifsud Naughton (1st Year). Congratulations- these girls won:
The Junior Physics Prize and The Sustainable Energy Ireland Award
for their project examining the effects of different materials in decreasing heat loss through the walls floors and roofs of houses. They plan to continue their project and design a 21st Century EcoHouse for the next BT Young Scientist.Fantastic achievements- well done.
Anna Colwell, Daisy Barron & Aaron Ram (1st Year) . Congratulations- these students won 3 awards
The Junior Technology Prize The Discover Sensors Award The Global Citizenship Prize
for their project examining designing and building a non-electric fridge for Africa. Amazing achievements – well done. The students plan to do further research on increased cooling methods and take their project forward to the BT Young Scientist.
All of the students were great ambassadors for the school and can be really proud of themselves.
BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2012 – News
Congratulations to the 2 teams from SPS in this years BTYS Exhibition.
