A Message from Liam Burns, Principal of Sutton Park Intermediate School
Liam Burns, Principal of Sutton Park Intermediate School
Mr Liam Burns
Intermediate School Principal
Welcome to Sutton Park Intermediate School pages.

The Intermediate school is situated in the magnificent building which was the original Sutton Park School. It is rich in character and provides a unique backdrop for your child to enjoy a progressive and challenging educational experience.

The Intermediate School aims to build on the firm foundations established in Junior School. We promote a formal teaching and learning environment intended to foster a greater degree of independence, creating enquiring minds resulting in transference of skills and life-long learning.

Children follow a more definite timetable and are gradually introduced to the ways of Senior School. New subjects including French and Technical Drawing are introduced in addition to the core subjects of Maths , English and Irish. The creative element of the curriculum is excellently catered for with provision of PE,Art, Music and Drama.

Our emphasis in the intermediate school is:

- to promote the highest standards in English and Maths
- to address the individual needs of our children through a wide range of differentiated activities
- to regularly assess attainment to ensure each child is progressing at a rate commensurate with their individual ability
- to promote scientific enquiry through experimentation and practical activities
- to develop strong IT skills, equipping our children for the future

Paramount to these goals is that our children are taught in a warm, supportive, challenging and fun- filled environment

Our teachers are fully committed to the use of new, exciting, effective strategies, which ensure quality teaching and learning . New schemes of work are being developed to meet the requirements of the new Primary School Curriculum. Within these will be a particular focus on “ Learning Outcomes” and the skills developed in each curricular area.
We pride ourselves on provision of a caring, comprehensive support programme for those children experiencing difficulties with their work. Both English and Mathematics are targeted in this respect.

Children have regular access to our modern computer suite and engage in a full sports programme using a superb astro- turf pitch, a grass sports area, heated outdoor swimming pool and a gymnasium. We pride ourselves on developing a great interest in hockey in all of our children and also promoting excellence in those who demonstrate outstanding ability in this field. We also boast a great tradition in badminton, with many of our children representing Leinster and all of our children participating on a weekly basis. Recently we have sought to promote football as an activity and the overwhelming interest has ensured its place as an important area of the curriculum. We also introduce a competitive element with challenge matches against other schools.
We strive to bring your child to independence, not only through our classroom practice but also through the structure of the school day.

With this in mind your child can avail of our Homework Club, held Monday to Thursday from 3.30pm to 4.45pm. Here we provide a quiet, settled environment where children learn to work methodically through their set work without the normal input from home. They also see their peers engaged in their work and develop positive habits through such observation.

Intermediate school children also enjoy use of our dining room facility where they can eat their own lunch or purchase a quality hot mea provided by our independent caterers.
