ABOUT THE LIBRARY

The aim of the Sutton Park School Library is to provide all students and staff of the School with an information centre to support their educational growth. The Librarians offer support by helping prepare relevant information for both class and individual projects. Our long-term aim is to foster a love of books and reading, both for leisure and work-related activities.

The Library which holds 12,000 resources provides a service for all primary and second level students ranging from the ages of 4 to 19. Access to the Library is available from 8.45 am to 5.00 pm, when one of the librarians is present.

The Main Library holds all the non-fiction stock, and also senior and junior fiction books which complement and support the educational needs of the curriculum. It also contains Reference, Career Guidance and Audio Visual materials, as well as Examination Papers, Books on Tape, Periodicals and Newspapers. The Reference area includes encyclopaedias, dictionaries, atlases, language cassettes, videos and a career guidance section.

The Library also contains seven computers with printing facilities, as well as a scanner and a photocopier for pupils’ use. Six of the computers are connected to the Internet, while the seventh is networked to the Heritage Library Management System, allowing pupils to access the Enquiry Module and search the catalogue for relevant information.

The Junior Library is situated within the Main Library, and contains fiction and non-fiction books, videos and audio tapes appropriate to Junior readers.

Both Libraries are classed under the Dewey Classification Scheme, which is the most widely used system in Europe. All records of users and stock are maintained on the user-friendly Heritage Library Management System.

USING THE LIBRARY

During the school year, some classes will be given projects to complete. To help students with their projects, the Librarians have established links from our Library Project Links page to appropriate and suitable internet sites where relevant information can be found. Also listed are sites of general interest that students might find useful.
