Classical Studies
      
We are one of the few privileged schools in Ireland who offer Classical Studies at Leaving Certificate level.

This subject covers area such as, the Drama, History and Philosophy of Ancient Greece and Rome.
Classical studies is a Leaving Certificate subject. It is equal in points to the other Leaving Certificate subjects.

The subject involves the study of:-
* Ancient Greece and Rome
* Their History and Literature
* Their Drama
* Famous people such as Alexander the Great
      
      
      
'Plato' The Philosopher
      
      
This section of the course involves the study of “The Republic” by Plato. This book is a Socratic dialogue written in C. 380 BC. It is one of the most influential works on philosophy and political theory, and Plato’s best-known work.

In Plato’s fictional dialogues the characters of Socrates as well as various Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice, the role of the philosopher, the place of poetry and the immortality of the soul.
      
      
      
      
      
'Alexander The Great'
      
      
This section of the course involves a very detailed study of Alexander the Great from the point of view of two historians Arrian and Plutarch.

He is one of the most fascinating characters in history, who became king at 20 years old and managed to untie Greece to fight and defeat the Persian Empire. His campaign took him through Egypt, India and Babylon- establishing new cities and destroying others.

He is on of the greatest charismatic leaders on history with boundless ambitions and was worshipped as a god in his own lifetime.
      
      
      
      
      
      
      
In this section the following Greek plays are studied:
* Oedipus the King, by Sophocles
* Medea, by Euripides
* Prometheus Bound, by Aeschylus
      
Sigmunel Freud based his famous Oedipus complex on the main character in the play of Oedipus the king. They have influenced the greatest writers and poets in the world from Lord Byron to Shakespeare.
      
      
      
      
      
Voyage of 'Odysseus'
      
This involves the study of the epic tale “The Odyssey” by Homer.

This story is based on a poem hundreds of pages long, and tells of Odysseus and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War. It is a story of a man of great courage and can overcome any obstacle. James Joyce based “Ulysses” on this great piece of work.
