TRANSITION YEAR CYCLE CURRICULUM

Vision/Aims
Achieve skills and vocabulary to deal with everyday-life situations were you to be on holiday in a Spanish-speaking country.

Curriculum Content
As it is an introductory course, it is similar to the Junior Cert syllabus, giving information about oneself, engaging in informal conversations and dealing with common tasks in restaurants, hotels, shops, train stations, etc.

There is also some contact with Spanish culture and traditions. We look at the most important fiestas and traditions around Christmas and Easter and we look at Spanish gastronomy.

Approaches And Methodologies
Classroom exercises will be geared to improve reading, writing, listening and speaking skills using authentic texts in a communicative manner.

Homework
They will have to do exercises based on the topics covered in class, or learn some new vocabulary. At the end of the year they will do a project based on 2 topics of their choice related to Spanish geography, sport, company, artists,…

Resources
Class handouts, taken from school textbooks, tapes and videos,

ICT
Students to the computer room to do projects – i.e, find their way around a city looking up a real map and give directions, research information about a Spanish regions, look for information on a celebrity.
      
SENIOR CYCLE CURRICULUM
The two-year course will give the students the skills to be able to live, work and communicate through the medium of Spanish

Vision/Aims
To give the students the ability and confidence to use the Spanish language whether it is for work or on holiday.

The Syllabus is followed by the Department of Education Guidelines

Approaches And Methodologies
All exercises are geared towards mastering all four sections of the exam: reading, writing, speaking & listening

Homework
They will do grammar-based exercises, write compositions, read texts and do the comprehension, learn vocabulary, transfer information.

Resources
Leaving Certificate textbooks: Sigue, Meta, Al Tanto, Pasos, Ele; Magazines, newspapers, articles, videos and the Internet

Planning And Reporting
Classes are planned at the beginning of the year. It is quite a challenging course, the students have to be brought up to a Higher Leaving Certificate standard in just 2 years. The Junior Certificate programme is broadly covered (as by the Department of Education) in 5th year and the Leaving Certificate course in 6th year.

5th Year: Specific communicative tasks is covered, enabling students to talk about themselves, their family, their hobboes and school life and routine. Specific transactions such as ordering food and drink in restaurants, buying a variety of products, booking a ticket, giving and understanding directions, dealing with sickness, making arrangements, talking about future plans or talking about how things were or what you did in the past.
6th Year: Concentrate on the themes as quoted in the Leaving Certificate syllabus; Addictions – drug and alcohol abuse; immigration and inequalities; position of women in modern society; young people problems: bullying, peer pressure, influence of fashion and press; Ireland as a changing society; ecology and environmental issues, animal rights
