Technical Graphics and Design & Communication Department
Peter Timmins
B.Sc. Materials & Construction Tech Ed

Peter Timmins is Head of Sutton Park School's exciting and vibrant Technical Drawing Department. Aside from the core Technical Drawing curriculum, the TD Department offers a range of extra-curricular options to any student with interest and aptitude. From completing an Interior Design project to studying principles of engineering to going for a qualification in AutoCAD (Computer Aided Design software), the students who study Technical Drawing (Technical Graphics in the Junior Cycle) at Sutton Park find themselves very highly prepared for further study in the fields of Architecture, Engineering, Draughtsmanship and related careers.
Great Success For Students at 'Imaginate' Design Competition 2009
Some 1,600 students registered for the first ‘Imaginate’ design competition, organized by NUI Maynooth recently. They were then whittled down to a shortlist of 16. Four students from Sutton Park School made it onto this shortlist. The winning senior entry, a Zen workstation, was proposed by Zachery Holmes. It is a device which is designed for the classroom of the future and is ergonomically designed to meet the needs of every student. His prize included a cheque for €500, a video ipod, a stunning trophy, a 3D model of his winning design and an interactive whiteboard for the Design & Communication Graphics Department in his school.

Adam Kielty was awarded 3rd place in the junior category and Niamh Lowney took the overall award for the best poster in the competition.

“In a time of such economic gloom it is terrific to receive this excellent news” said Peter Timmins, their Design Teacher. “We are immensely proud of these four students to even make it to the shortlist of 16. It is a terrific achievement for such a small school like Sutton Park. There were schools from Belfast to Kerry and Mayo to Wexford at yesterday’s ceremony and for these students to scoop the top awards is truly phenomenal”.

Fourth Year Student Amazes with his Technical Drawing Skills
Fourth Year student
Pablo Ovelleiro Corral
Fourth Year student and boarder Pablo Ovelleiro Corral has shown amazing observational and drawing skills in his Technical Drawing class. Following a slideshow presented by Mr Timmins of famous Italian architecture, Pablo drew from memory, in a very short space of time, a large number of representations of these famous buildings, all amazingly accurate, and all highly artistic. A display of some of his work on Open Night drew lots of attention and admiration. It would seem very likely that Pablo’s future will feature an exciting and successful career in a field related to Technical Drawing.

Transition Year Technical Drawing Student Draws Praise
Transition Year student
Max Van de Poll
Technical Drawing students in Sutton Park Transition Year (Fourth Year) are introduced to AutoCAD, the most comprehensive computer aided design programme available today. Practically all architects and engineers in the world of design use this system.

One Transition Year student who has shown great aptitude in this programme is Max van de Poll. This drawing is but one example of his outstanding portfolio. It is a complex representation in perspective projection of a factory, which he completed while on work experience with one of Europe's leading Civil Engineering firms, Buro Hapold. So delighted were they with his work that they have asked to feature this drawing as part of their display in an upcoming exhibition to be held in London.

The year-long Transition Year Programme (TYP) is designed to help students make the transition from the Junior Certificate course to the more academic Leaving Certificate syllabus, which places greater emphasis on individual
research abilities, study skills and a more demanding, analytical approach to subject matter. While some of the TYP course content is devoted to traditional academic subjects as preparation for the Leaving Certificate course, an important part is devoted to the provision of enrichment opportunities for students in many useful life skills. The flexible nature of the TYP allows students to get involved in different projects and activities throughout the year, and to examine fields of endeavour not possible in the regular curriculum.

The possibility for students to discover a heretofore-unknown aptitude in one of these disciplines is one of the great strengths of the TYP. The TYP Technical Drawing course also introduces students to Architecture, Mechanical and Civil Engineering and Interior Design. Although none of these is taught at Sutton Park as a Leaving Certificate subject, this course may undoubtedly influence some of our students to pursue careers in one of these areas. Perhaps we may see Max van de Poll designing world-class buildings in the future?
