| | | | | | | Official Opening of the Samuel Beckett Bridge - December 2009 | | Students from our Design & Communications class undertook a project involving the design and construction of the new modern Samuel Beckett Bridge on Dublin's River Liffey.
Student projects involved details from the design stage to the execution of the bridge with the help and guidance from the official engineers of the bridge.
Engineering Topics were covered from the Centre of Gravity, Tensile Forces to Wind Loads being investigated.
Students of Sutton Park the first official organised group to stand on the bridge when it arrived in Dublin and subsequently the only secondary school whose students were invited to the official opening of the bridge where they met the family of Samuel Beckett himself, the son of Dr Santiago Calatrava who is one of the worlds great architects and engineers and who designed the bridge, Lord Mayor Cllr Emer Costello and Seamus Heaney, Poet Lauret. |
| About The New Bridge The Samuel Beckett Bridge is the latest addition to Dublin's impressive inventory of Liffey bridges. Located in the heart of dublin's docklands it provides a valuable new link between the north and south quays in the area. The iconic structure was commissioned by Dublin City Council and designed by the internationally acclaimed artist, architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava.
The concept for the bridge came from Calatrava's gralnce at the harp on the back of an Irish coin, leading him to be inspired to design a bridge that reflected the shape of the national emblem. Its curved pylon produces a dramatic shape giving the appearance of a harp lying on its side. The structure is a magnificent paradox o slenderness and strength that embellishes the cityscape, particularly when it is illuminated against the night sky. The cable stay bridge is unique in Ireland as it is capable of rotating through an angle of 90 degrees to accommodate occassional maritime traffic.
Samuel Beckett Bridge was opened by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Emer Costello on 10th December 2009. | | Here is some photographs taken of our Students at the Official Opening. | | | Students of Sutton Park the first group to stand on the bridge. |
